A critical element of the Growth Point Transport Vision is the promotion of sustainable transport which includes reducing the need to travel by car and by doing so reducing congestion and improving air quality.

The scale of development proposed in Exeter and East Devon can only be sustainable if more people are encouraged to use public transport in the area.

For this to happen significant investment needs to be made into the improvement of road and rail transport:

High Quality Public Transport Link (HQPT1 and HQPT 2)

Devon County Council are proposing a HQPT or high quality public transport scheme which would provide a high capacity bus link between the major developments in the City, East Devon, the City centre and the South West  Exeter area.

The potential for delivering a second HQPT route linking St. Davids Station,  Exeter University, the city centre and the planned urban extension at Newcourt is also being assessed.

Transport Interchanges

The improvement of transport interchanges (places where people switch from one mode of transport to another) throughout Exeter is critical to increasing the number of people using public transport, this includes enhancing the convenience of public transport and the reliability of journey time.

New Railway Stations at Cranbrook and Newcourt

These proposed railway stations are essential to encouraging people to use public transport between the new residential areas and employment developments.  This will help to reduce the impact of such developments on the constrained highway network.

New Passing Loops on Exeter-Waterloo Railway Line and Exmouth-Exeter Line

The passing loops will improve Exeter's transport connections to the UK's major urban centres and Exeter's neighbouring towns. This again will help to reduce the carbon footprint of travel both in and outside the city.

New Park and Ride at Alphington

This scheme is required to maintain access from the west of the urban area into the city centre and to help reduce congestion on Alphington Road.

Development of an Orbital Bus Route within Exeter

This scheme will increase public transport use across Exeter and access to a range of services and facilities within the City.

Additional Bus Lanes onto Old A30

This scheme delivers public transport from the major developments on the A30 corridor e.g. Cranbrook, Skypark.
