First Building on Exeter Science Park

A traditional ‘Topping Out' event for the first building on Exeter Science Park was held at 12 noon Thursday 13th June 2013.

The construction of the first building on in the twenty six hectare Exeter Science Park has reached a significant milestone.

Developer Eagle One, contractor Interserve Construction and their invited guests today held a ceremony to mark the ‘topping out’ of the building. The BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated building, designed by Exeter based Architect LHC, will be the new Headquarters’ for Eagle One and sister company Blue Cedar Homes, which will occupy the first floor of this prominent building.

The ground floor suite is being made available to occupiers requiring early occupation in this key location. Exeter based property consultant Maze has been appointed as the letting agent for this space.

This first building within Phase 1 of Exeter Science Park is due for completion in October 2013 and is being constructed by Interserve Construction, part of the international support services and construction Interserve group. The three storey 1,100 sq metre building will provide up to 450 sq metres accommodation for businesses on the ground floor, with a key focus being on attracting science based users. The lower ground floor of the reinforced concrete framed building will provide bicycle storage, archiving and general support facilities.

The building will be highly sustainable, with roof mounted photovoltaic cells producing electricity, along with natural ventilation and high levels of insulation to reduce energy use.

The building is also designed to link with the district heating systems planned for the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point. Phase 1 of Exeter Science Park will also provide for a 150 bed business hotel and conference centre, the Science Park Centre and a further 4,000 sq metres of space in a range of building sizes for science-based organisations. The Science Park campus, which provides for some 76,000 sq metres of development in total, forms the gateway to the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point area.

The Science Park will play a key role in supporting the economy of Exeter and the wider area to grow and diversify through the development of knowledge-based businesses, capitalising on links within this sector including the University of Exeter, the Peninsula Medical School, and the Met Office. Located adjacent to Junction 29 on the M5 motorway, the Exeter Science Park is set to be one of the most significant investments in the South West’s rapidly expanding knowledge economy.

Paul Goodes, Managing Director of Eagle One said “As Eagle One approaches its 30th Anniversary in 2014, the significant investment in this building heralds both our commitment and confidence in the future of the region’s economy. The design and strategic location of the building were key in our decision to make this investment. We are looking forward to taking occupation in the autumn.”

Richard Ellis, South West Director for Interserve said “Today’s topping out ceremony signifies a key milestone in the project with anticipation and expectation increasing as we now head toward completion of this flagship building later this year. We are delighted and proud to be playing our part in constructing the new Headquarters for Eagle One and the first building on the Exeter Science Park.
