The Vision

The partners of the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point want to create sustainable new communities, where residents will be able to access skilled employment opportunities or training close by.  

Within the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point development programme there is now the  potential to create 26,600 jobs over the next 15 - 20 years and deliver 20,000 new homes. 

Through detailed masterplanning, the Local Development Framework and the creation of Local Plans, the aim has been to develop sustainable new communities with good community facilities, schools, green open spaces and good transport links.

The need for housing and affordable housing has been a big issue in Exeter and East Devon in recent years. Between 1991 and 2001 the population growth in Exeter was nearly 4 x the national average.

This problem was captured in a report by the National Housing Federation (Home Truths 2011), which stated that the average house price in Exeter was almost 11 times annual earnings, whilst in East Devon the average house price was over 14 times annual earnings.

Together with the planned strategic employment sites and improvements to major transport routes, the vision is to create truly sustainable communities in an area of substantial growth.

These communities include the proposed new community of Cranbrook in East Devon, the urban extensions of Exeter at Newcourt, Monkerton/Hill Barton and an area covered by the South West Exeter Masterplan.
