Cranbrook’s first independently run retail outlet opened on 9th March 2016.
The coffee shop known as @143 is located opposite St Martin’s Primary School in the neighbourhood shops on Younghayes Road.
Offering morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, the coffee shop will be run by well-known cakemaker to Cranbrook, Caroline Fowles.
“The cafe is open from Tuesdays to Fridays from 9am until 4pm, and on Saturday mornings.
“I want the cafe to be a focal point for local people and it’s important to me that the community feel part of it. Giving a welcoming atmosphere, the cafe will be a place where people can socialise and chat, so they keep coming back. Everyone is welcome!
“We plan to involve the community in the running of the cafe, asking for ideas about special events and activities. I am displaying and selling arts and crafts from local people. There’s free wifi available and plug sockets for people to use laptops and mobile devices.
“We’ve already had an enquiry from a book club who want to meet in the cafe. Small clubs and groups will be welcome to meet in @143, if they pre-book. We want to provide a range of activities.
“We are selling delicious cakes, savoury snacks and light lunches. In addition, I’ll continue to make celebration cakes to order through Cranberrie Cakes. In future, we may run a pop-up restaurant.
“I’ll mainly work in the kitchen making cakes and I’ve recruited 2 part-time people locally to take orders and provide a friendly service in the cafe.
“I also want to use local produce from Devon as much as possible. For example, I’m ordering coffee from Voyager in Buckfastleigh. They roast their own coffee. It’s Fairtrade, Organic and Rainforest Alliance certified.”
The cafe is the latest addition to the neighbourhood shops opposite the Younghayes Centre in Cranbrook. It joins the Co-operative, a takeaway food outlet, an estate agent and the Cranbrook Pharmacy which re-located to its own premises from the Younghayes Centre. A charity shop is due to open soon.
